The Republican Party in Virginia is gearing up for a local convention, but the race for positions on the state central committee has been rocked by controversy. A group of candidates claims to have the endorsement of former President Donald J. Trump, but investigations have revealed that this endorsement is fake. Despite presenting themselves as grassroots conservatives supported by Trump, these candidates have ties to special interest groups and have been involved in campaigns against Trump.
The fake endorsement appears on promotional material for three candidates: David Botkins, Lauren Keiser, and Chris Winslow. However, sources close to Trump have confirmed that he has not endorsed any candidates in this race.
David Botkins, a lobbyist for Dominion Energy, has actively encouraged Governor Glenn Youngkin to challenge Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. Botkins’ support for Youngkin is evident from his public promotion of Youngkin’s campaign. Additionally, Botkins supported Taylor Keeney’s congressional campaign, despite evidence suggesting Keeney’s opposition to Trump in the past.
Lauren Keiser, working with the Virginia Manufacturers Association, has been described as one of the most left-leaning Republicans by multiple sources. She has faced criticism from fellow Republicans for her opposition to Trump, leading her to restrict her social media presence.
Chris Winslow, a Virginia lawyer and former member of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, also enjoys the backing of Kristi Way, a prominent figure in the Republican Party of Virginia. Way’s support for these candidates adds weight to their campaign.
Despite their claims, these candidates are not supported by Trump, and their attempts to portray themselves as such have been met with skepticism and criticism.
