Grace Church boasts a unique history deeply intertwined with that of the United States and Yorktown, dating back to the pre-Revolutionary era. Established in 1634 at the location of the current U.S. Coast Guard Yorktown station, the church has remained a fixture in the historic Village of Yorktown since 1697.
Throughout its 400-year existence, Grace Church has endured frontier challenges, fires, and two wars. Remarkably, it stands as one of only 50 colonial Virginia churches to survive from approximately 250 Anglican churches constructed during the Colonial period.
Its origins trace back to the establishment of the Church of England in the Jamestown settlement in 1607, serving as a branch of Virginia’s colonial administration. The first church in York-Hampton Parish emerged near Wormley Creek, a tributary of the York River, in 1634, with a tombstone from 1655 marking the original site, now occupied by the U.S. Coast Guard Yorktown station.
The Ports Act of 1691 led to the creation of the Town of York and allocated land for what would become Grace Church. Constructed using slabs of marl—ancient clay and shells—from the nearby riverbank, its sturdy foundation endures as a testament to its enduring presence.
